    Moments of the generalized hyperbolic distribution

    In this paper we demonstrate a recursive method for obtaining the moments of the generalized hyperbolic distribution. The method is readily programmable for numerical evaluation of moments. For low order moments we also give an alternative derivation of the moments of the generalized hyperbolic distribution. The expressions given for these moments may be used to obtain moments for special cases such as the hyperbolic and normal inverse Gaussian distributions.     SME Access to Credit

    The aim of this paper is to inform the reader about the access to credit of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam based on two SME surveys. Recent evidence from a variety of sources suggests that credit to available to SMEs has increased over the past few years. This is confirmed by the two SME surveys. Fewer firms which applied for credit in 2005 were denied credit as compared to 2002. However, the rapid development of the private sector has also increased demand for credit (especially among the larger SMEs); and it appears that the formal financial sector is just managing to keep track with growth in general. We conclude by discussing these results and formulate a set of policy recommendations.Vietnam; credit constraints; financial markets

    SME Fringe Benefits Provision

    The aim of this paper is to inform the reader about the distribution of fringe benefits provided to employees by firms in 10 provinces of Vietnam. Five types of benefits are considered: Annual leave, maternity leave, sick leave, social insurance and health insurance. We especially focus on whether the gender of the owner has an effect on the fringe benefits provided. It appears that women firm owners are more likely to provide employees with fringes, and this gender effect exists primarily in non-household enterprises and is robust to the inclusion of standard determinants of wage compensation. We dscuss these results and formulate a set ofpolicy recommendations.Vietnam; gender; fringe benefits

    Universal Cloud Controller (UCC), a Cloud-centred system using personal mobile devices to control public devices

    We engage different working environments on a daily basis, including private and public environments. When we move from one to another constantly, the data also need to be transferred, and while the private environment is convenient, working with public devices creates the irritation of authentication. This dissertation proposes Universal Cloud Controller (UCC), a multi-components system that improves user’s experience when exchange data from personal to public device. The main functions of the system are to provide a selection mechanism to eliminate the authentication, and an instantly, smoothly, and conveniently data transferring and manipulation solution between user’s personal devices and public devices. We described UCC in both user’s perspective and technical specification, addressing the challenges of designing and developing the system and also proposing the solution. Technologies and related studies were also investigated to learn from their advantages and limitations. Consequently, a working prototype was constructed based on the design and used for a study to evaluate the usability of UCC. The results proved that the designed system is potential and promising for public release, but also contained flaws and limitations. Finally, the paper concluded the topic and suggested future works

    Convergence analysis of a Crank-Nicolson Galerkin method for an inverse source problem for parabolic equations with boundary observations

    This work is devoted to an inverse problem of identifying a source term depending on both spatial and time variables in a parabolic equation from single Cauchy data on a part of the boundary. A Crank-Nicolson Galerkin method is applied to the least squares functional with an quadratic stabilizing penalty term. The convergence of finite dimensional regularized approximations to the sought source as measurement noise levels and mesh sizes approach to zero with an appropriate regularization parameter is proved. Moreover, under a suitable source condition, an error bound and corresponding convergence rates are proved.     Comparing Traditional Body Mass Index and Joslin Diabetes Center’s Asian Body Mass Index in Predicting Self-Report Type 2 Diabetes.

    This study examined the predictability of traditional Body Mass Index standards and the Joslin Diabetes Center’s recommended BMI standards for Asian Americans. A sample of 2973 adult Asian Americans aged 45 and older from the 2009 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) was used. This sample consists of 12.25% of respondents with type 2 diabetes and 87.75% that had neither type 2 or any types of diabetes. Logistic regression was used to estimate the predictability of two the BMI standards and to test for the interaction effect of BMI standards and sex in predicting type 2 diabetes. The results revealed that both traditional and Joslin Diabetes Center’s recommended standards had similar predictability of types 2 diabetes. Both BMI standards of overweight and obesity had a greater association with type 2 diabetes for men than for women. That is, given a similar level of BMI, men tend to report a greater prevalence of type 2 diabetes than women. These findings support caution in changing BMI cut-offs for Asian Americans, and highlight the potential limitations of using BMI as a measure of risk for diabetes in this population

    High-Gain Observer–Based Sliding Mode Control of Multimotor Drive Systems

    Multimotor drive systems have been widely used in many modern industries. It is a nonlinear, multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) and strong-coupling complicated system, including the effect of friction, elastic, and backlash. The control law for this drive system much depends on the determining of the tension. However, it is hard to obtain this tension in practice by using a load cell or a pressure meter due to the accuracy of sensors or external disturbance. In order to solve this problem, a high-gain observer is proposed to estimate the state variables in this drive system, such as speeds and tension. An emerging proposed technique in the control law is the use of high-gain observers together with adaptive sliding mode control scheme to obtain a separation principle for the stabilization of whole system. The theory analysis and simulation results point out the good effectiveness of the proposed output feedback for the drive system

    Few-Shot Object Detection via Synthetic Features with Optimal Transport

    Few-shot object detection aims to simultaneously localize and classify the objects in an image with limited training samples. However, most existing few-shot object detection methods focus on extracting the features of a few samples of novel classes that lack diversity. Hence, they may not be sufficient to capture the data distribution. To address that limitation, in this paper, we propose a novel approach in which we train a generator to generate synthetic data for novel classes. Still, directly training a generator on the novel class is not effective due to the lack of novel data. To overcome that issue, we leverage the large-scale dataset of base classes. Our overarching goal is to train a generator that captures the data variations of the base dataset. We then transform the captured variations into novel classes by generating synthetic data with the trained generator. To encourage the generator to capture data variations on base classes, we propose to train the generator with an optimal transport loss that minimizes the optimal transport distance between the distributions of real and synthetic data. Extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state of the art. Source code will be available

    The physical properties of asymmetric nuclear matter are studied in the Extended Nambou-Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model formulated directly in the nucleon degrees of freedom. It results that the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy and its related quantities are basically in good agreement with data of recent analyses
